It does not matter if you’re a Social Media Manager for a big brand or you’re simply an individual posting a picture of your beloved cat, the experience of watching your post rank & go viral on Facebook can be thrilling. There is this unique rush you get, as your content piece that you strategically posted on Facebook starts, (in which I like to call) “ EdgeRank’ing”. In other words, it starts to go viral & is like a snowball effect. Like after like, produces comments ,which then turn into a shares. We have seen that posts have a limited lifespan, so you will be thrilled when that “big network influencer “ gets a hold of your post & shares it. That share adds just enough edgerank juice to keep it ranking throughout the night.
One does not need to be a Social Media Manager or Content Marketer to have interest in getting a grip on Facebook’s Algorithm. You probably share things that you love, perhaps your work, you share so that your crafted content is seen. With that said, we start seeing more & more of the idea of the promotion of your “personal brand”. For anyone that is interested in marketing a product, service or brand on a Facebook Page, it is actually quite essential that you at least understand how this algorithm works. If you’re like me you have worked hard on this piece of content, both online & offline. You worked hard to get that perfect shot or editing an article to be published. Combing all of this with various strategies geared for a reaction that compels a person to engage it & share it. From my person experience, I commonly find myself fighting the clock, as your “Prime Time” to post approaches, your working to nail that time & lets the Edgerank’ing begin!
Perhaps your a casual Facebook user & you ask “How do you rank on Facebook’s Algorithm & what is involved? It is actually a mix of some really basic concepts mixed with some science. If the individual or brand is not an influencer & not well networked ,then a little bit of luck does not hurt, but luck is not measurable so well focus on the science & basics in a future article!
What is EdgeRank?
An article on eConsultancy summed it up in a nice manner. They defined EdgeRank as “one of the most important algorithms in marketing today”. EdgeRank is the name of the algorithm which Facebook uses to determine what connections or content appears in their users’ news feeds. With so much information available to stream across a Facebook news feed, EdgeRank is Facebooks way in determining what they think would be interesting for you to see & the order in which it appears. So much Your everyday Facebook user probably does not know much about it & if they have, does not put much thought into it. Article after article has been written about it & still even less people can proclaim that they completely understand it.
The fact is, your ability to understand the rules of the algorithm is crucial for your success. You will need to measure what has worked for you in the past & what has worked among your peers. Expect to change up your tactics to reflect the system, for this will make the difference between a business changing campaign, a post with no “juice” or even worse an embarrassing failure.
With the plethora of information & discussion about Facebook’s EdgeRank floating around the Internet. I found this Infographic produced by PostPlanner fairly informative & easy on the eyes . PostPlanner offers a Facebook app that allows you to post your content in advance & without sacrificing post weight. Why is this important? There has been a discussion at large, in how the posts that are posted from Social Media Dashboard, do not hold as much weight in the algorithmic ranking system.
