Google’s video sharing service monster known as Youtube experience some downtime today. The website was throwing out a HTTP 500 Server Error. Although the downtime was short lived, Twitter quickly lit up with tweets on the situation. Tweets consisting of complaints, questions such as Why was Youtube down? and all out despair (no exaggeration. ) Critics of Google wasted no time poking fun at the matter such as; “So Google has closed?”
When you visited the page you were met with the error code (see photo on the right). The line below stated Google’s trademark phrase trying to ease any anxiety on the matter: ” Sorry, something went wrong. A team of highly trained monkeys has been dispatched to deal with this situation.
Then leading onto a page of raw code:

Youtube’s team of highly trained monkeys, as Google likes to call them were able to quickly fix the situation. Even though Youtube’s downtime was only a mere 5-7 minutes. It is interesting to see how deeply our habits and rituals are embedded in our daily routine. Twitter alone displayed this including my own frustration.
During the time of this post, Techcrunch has been the only source reporting on Youtube going down and the web service has not released any statements of the reasoning behind this downtime. Techcrunch mentioned that ” Google is having a very bad day”. This said after Google’s earnings were leaked via a printer resulting in a ripple effect at Wall street.
All of this considered. One has to wonder how much traffic was lost during this downtime which terminal consequence results as loss of revenue. I am sure that Google will feel no effects of this revenue loss but is just food for thought.
UPDATE:YouTube has issued the following statement: “Some users encountered errors, or a slower than normal experience on YouTube today. Our engineers worked quickly to address the issue and fixed the problem within minutes. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this caused our users.”
